Occupational Therapy Credo

"In this life we cannot do great things.  We can only do
small things with great love.” Mother Teresa

It’s my belief that we are all in this together, each connected to the other, as fellow humans on the earth. Love connects us all.

My core values and beliefs revolve around love, caring, forgiveness and faith, about striving each day to be a better person. I look at these words and these ideals and I see the perfection in them. And then there is me….

But this as all part of the beauty of His plan. In our brokenness, our shortcoming, our weakness we can be healed.  This is what my faith has taught me and I’ve come to know to be true. Spiritual healing is fundamental to healing of our bodies and minds.  And spiritual healing can be accomplished through love, or in Occupational Therapy terms: through Attending and Responding.

I want to be a part of this profession that takes into account not just the physical person but the person we really are inside.  And I want to support and contribute to my patients healing with my whole self as well.  This philosophy is supported by the core values and attitudes (AOTA, 1993) of Occupational Therapy of altruism, equality,
freedom, justice, dignity, truthfulness and prudence.  Values not only to
work by but to live by.

I feel that this is my professional purpose; to utilize my strengths as a nurturing and caring person to support my client in healing and to encourage their joy and motivation through the healing power of love and occupation.

My favorite quote is from Mother Teresa and it expresses how I strive to live each day:

“In this life we cannot do great things.  We can only do
small things with great love.”
